lyrics

I. Five Years (August 2010)

Five years, waiting on an angel
Chin up, tell yourself that change will
Come to you if you hope it hard enough
Just wait, and soon enough New Orleans
Will win back all of its importance
I'm getting kind of tired of all that stuff

(chorus 1)

They say that I have left my family, they say that I have left my home
But it was home that left me stranded on a rooftop all alone
So now I'm moving, now I'm moving, now I'm moving north

No, fine, let's have ourselves a parade
You'd think that after half a decade
They'd get it close to how it was before
This road looks like a choppy ocean
And time has stopped and left it frozen
Don't think that my car's shocks can take much more

(chorus 1)

II. Fargo (September through November, 2010)

I set my compass north and drove to Minnesota
Stepped across the Mississippi where it started as a stream
And then I headed west, I drove until I needed rest
And rolled into a town to sleep and woke up in a dream
I've no idea what made me come this way

(chorus 2)

I started hauling cargo, ended up in Fargo
Figured that I might as well stay

I didn't mind the snow as much as I was told I would
Before long found some work that made me pleasantly perspire
I spent my afternoons dividing logs for firewood
And spend my evenings drinking by a fire
I guess it's in my DNA

(chorus 2 x2)

III. Panic (May 2011)

Stay inside your houses
It came on the radio
Unless you leave the state, they said
But I've got nowhere to go, I've got nowhere to go

I feel that panic, panic – Feel that panic, panic
I feel that panic rising in me like a creature giving chase
I feel that panic, panic – Feel that panic, panic
I feel that panic rising in me like a bubble in the lake

I thought it was a nightmare
I've heard this noise before
The water seems to follow me
But I just don't know what for, I just don't know what for

I feel that panic, panic – Feel that panic, panic
I feel that panic rising in me like a cable turning slack
I feel that panic, panic – Feel that panic, panic
I feel that panic rising in me like a river through the cracks

I feel that panic, panic – Feel that panic, panic
I feel that panic rising in me like a dog without a chain
I feel that panic, panic – Feel that panic, panic
I feel that panic rising in me like a horse without a rein

IV. Rain (June 2010)
V. Dry Land (July 2010)

Climbed out a window to the roof
Brought up a change of clothes and food
Did just what I had to do
I knew

I waved at the choppers in the clouds
One came and let its ladder down
And it raised me over town
We flew – We flew – We flew over North Dakota

Look at the craters of dry land
All made by able human hands
They laid the bags of sand
And prayed

Smell of decay is sickly sweet
People can barely even eat
Say a small grace for this receipt
To save – Save – Won't you save North Dakota
