I know that it sounds dire
it might even seem perverse
but every time you find my movements to your benefit
I'm used up bit by bit and I'm made worse
But I'm not really one for grudges
I try to keep my words in check
but all these things that pass right by my field of vision now
they move by with precision and turn black
And you can try to keep your focus pointed ahead
till you're swerving up and down every lane
and though you may see them coming back down the road
you know you're gonna lose them again
My vision through a tunnel
just like headlights in the night
is currently awash with all your gestures
before promptly disappearing from my sight
Yes in the past I kept on turning
towards all the miles I could accrue
but now I realize that every time you got
where you were going I wish I had gone there too
And while you may like to think you're part of it all
there's a distance that will grow as you age
and though you may see them coming back down the road
you know you're gonna lose them again
I tried my best to just keep up with you
and for a while we were the same
but time is kind and terrible this much is true
and now you're stuck with my remains
So now I'm caught between the oak trees
even more silent than before
and near the pavement where I was
once a modern chariot you've stranded me alone forevermore
And I see lights as they flicker off in the dark
and I'm feeling like I'm doing the same
and I feel time standing still it's permanent now
but I know I won't be moving again
I know I won't be leaving again

The sun is a-shinin, the forest is deep
Nobody sees us, slip thru Mr. Wilson’s trees..
We got a secret, we promised to keep
So I’m gonna follow you
To the Cadillac of ocean blue, boy
You’ll be the captain, and I’ll be the crew
Well this little place is our own
We speak of in code
Adventure is automatic out here
it’s a getaway car
a ship in the stars
In the DeVille the world disappears
We were eleven, we’d sneak here to hide
We’re seven years older, Wilson’s gone to join his bride
His car’s in the clearing, and we’ve got some time
So I’m gonna follow you
To that Cadillac that’s rustin through, boy
You’re gonna understand the way that I love you
Well this little place is our own
That nobody knows
Adventure is automatic out here
We’ll fix it up right
Drive off in the night
In the Deville the world disappears
La la la, La la la
Nobody’s gonna know
where we’re gonna go
In the DeVille the world disappears
And we’ve got to disappear, baby
We’ve got to disappear let the tracks wash away in the rain, so come with me Someday...
I’m gonna follow you
In a Cadillac that’s shiny and new, boy
You’re gonna understand the way that I love you...
Well this little place is our own (The sun is shining)
That nobody knows (The forest is deep)
Adventure is automatic out here (Nobody sees us)
It’s a getaway car
A ship in the stars
In the Deville the world disappears
La la la
In the DeVille the world can disappear (We've got a secret)
So come with me,
my baby,
and fly....

Well you left me behind a long long time ago
I guess I thought you'd come back, but even so
I'm not goin anywhere, I'm not sure that I could
Take me Back baby, I wish that you would
A little Rusty on the outside
A little worse for wear
Just sittin out here in the world somewhere
You'll never find another like me, baby that's for sure
Cause they don't make em like me anymore
Well I'm still waiting don't know what else to do
Slowly fallin apart without you
And I can feel my body agin', fallin apart at the seams
Sometimes my old life seems like nothing but a dream
A little rusty on the outside
Alittle worse for wear
Just sittin out here in the world somewhere
You'll never find another like me, baby that's for sure
Cause they don't make em like me anymore
Well you used to love me baby, when I was shiny and new
Back when you thought that there was nothing I couldn't do
And times have changed, but oh no not me
And you say I'm just a shadow of what I used to be
A little rusty on the outside
Alittle worse for wear
Just sittin out here in the world somewhere
You'll never find another like me, baby that's for sure
Cause they don't make em like me anymore

Skipping stones with you has turned my head
I was ready to give you my precious summer days before you said
That we can't be in love we're only nine years old
But Fiona, my heart beats still
As you curl up beside me in our secret world
I'll drive us away to a house by the sea
And between every wave you can skip stones with me
Some years later in the junior high
Where the boys and the girls meet at football games to flirt through the night
When I asked you to dance with me your cheeks turned red
And I knew from the way you held my hand
That you can't be in love with your first best friend
But Fiona, my heart beats still
And the air turns electric with one smile from you
Then one moonlit night we took to the woods
And we stumbled into our imaginary childhood
And we climbed into the car where this feeling began
You whispered we might be in love
Oh we might be in love
Oh Fiona, my heart beats still
As you curl up beside me in our secret world
I'll drive us away to a house by the sea
And between every wave you can skip stones with me

Remember when we were kids
Drive-in movies, road trips
Every step in my worn out sneakers
Was a step closer to your sunset smile
It might've been foolish
But I can't see how
You could bury your memories
Along with our vows
Rolled down the windows
And drove down the road
With not a care for all the world
We never thought we'd get old
Do you still have that pretty white dress?
I still have my car, it's rusted sitting in the grass
It's proof that our love
Has long been surpassed
It might've been foolish
But I can't see how
You could bury your memories
Along with our vows
Rolled down the windows
And drove down the road
With not a care for all the world
We never thought we'd get old
Rolled down the windows
And drove down the road
With not a care for all the world
We never thought we'd get old
It might've been foolish
But I can't see how
You could bury your memories
Along with our vows

old abandoned rusty love
where did you go
these seeds to sow
seasons hot and seasons cold
unending rain
deepest snow
back roads
black hills
your motor
trills on
those happy days of rolling free
pedal down
you took me
your took me far, so far beyond
these silent hills
did we abscond
back roads
black hills
your motor
trills on
it’s so unfair to leave you so
roll away
steel tombstone
long you live beyond the grave
my aching heart
did you once save
back roads
black hills
your motor
trills on

PHOTO FINISH
wmh 7.26.11
Two old horses have run the race
Both aging but undiminished
A little rusty, and lost of some spark
But crossing the line in a photo finish
I remember the past days like they are tomorrow
As fresh as a meadow in spring
Put out to pasture - no regrets and no sorrow
Looking forward to the promise the future would bring
Broken eyed - but not blind
Both victims of the ages and sun
But classic things never go out of style
They just get recycled around and return
Mettle or metal, which wins the battle
Relics of the past, neither one with the will to survive
Except into memories and fantasy
And the history of what walks or what rides
One dies a pauper- one retires to a museum
There’re some who would say they’re the same
Each of them sent to his own mausoleum
Never again to run on the tracks of the game
Broken eyed - but not blind
Both victims of the ages and sun
But classic things never go out of style
They just get recycled around and return

'Forgotten But Not Gone'
I could spend a lifetime wasting away remembering good times past
I'd pretend it's like my greatest days again blurring milestones passed
And my thinking of late is it's safe to say there's a million I've amassed
But the thing that makes them glory days is the fact that they don't last
And it's over now, and I'm settled down, not by choice but the clock is ticking on
I'm forgotten but not gone

would I believe you, should you say
I used to be so pretty
I used to send the sunglight back
And blind the gathered crowd
I was so smooth and spotless
And no one was so thoughtless
no cold, uncaring complaints
no jokes from who was loudest
if I'm so easy to discard
well then I'm glad the hard part's over
these shadows shake and grow
stretch across the grass and clover
it's just like they always said
the love you felt, it's in your head
they'll find something else to care about
this bitter nectar I was fed
a grave, displayed is where it lead
gutted by whispers and doubt
just rusted and flooded out
would you believe me if I said
that I deserve better
god knows that I'm not perfect
but I shouldn't be dismissed
you were so sure and steady
I guess I wasn't ready
for such callousness, indifference
to be proven to exist
so it seems that in some spotlights
though I was blinded, you lost sight
of the benefit of doubt
of just a bit of empathy
it's just like they always said
the love you felt, it's in your head
they'll find something else to care about
this bitter nectar I was fed
a grave displayed is where it lead
gutted by whispers and doubt
just rusted and flooded out
I lose
a coat of paint and means to begin
I lose
my voice cracks just like paper crumbling
I lose
a coat of paint, my lights slowly dim
I lose
I'll never move from this spot again
if I'm so easily abandoned
at least I cease to be your fixture
with any luck, this ugly scene
turns out to make a pretty picture
it's just like they always said
the love you felt, it's in your head
they'll find something else to care about
this bitter nectar I was fed
a grave, displayed is where it lead
gutted by whispers and doubt
just like you, avoiding blame
responsibility or shame
I need something else to care about
these wheels will never turn again
life disappeared around the bend
but until I can work that out
I'm just rusted, and flooded out
I'm just rusted, and flooded out (2x)
I lose (4x)

MALT SHOP IN THE SKY/SPACE CREATURES FROM OUTER SPACE/DO THE OCTOPUS
It was a dark and rainy night
I begged her not to go
Was I wrong, or was she right?
I guess I'll never know
I'll always know just where she is
But never how or why
My baby's in that malt shop in the sky
The Chevy felt so heavy
The road so slick and wet
That I forgot to fix the brakes
I will always regret
The road went left, the car went right
A Chevy cannot fly
My baby's in that malt shop in the sky
But who could know the really big surprise
The crash was seen by unexpected eyes
IT WAS SPACE CREATURES FROM OUTER SPACE!
Space Creatures from Outer Space (x3)
They're talking our women back to their place
They got ten eyes
They got 12 arms
Earth girls can't resist their charms
Space Creatures From Outer Space (x3)
They never lie, but they are two-faced.
ALIEN #1: I love Earth women!
ALIEN #2: I haven't had this much fun since I was orbiting Uranus!
They pick up chick to take to Mars
In souped-up hot rod spaceship cars
Space Creatures From Outer Space (x3)
Never dare them to a drag race
MAKE 'EM DO THE OCTOPUS!
Why don't you get three friends
Stand face to face
Wiggle your arms
All over the place
Chorus:
Do The Octopus!
It's really great!
Do The Octopus!
Don't be late!
Do the Octopus!
To the power of eight!
One and one is two
Two and two is four
Four and four is eight
And there just ain't no more
Chorus
Eeenie Meenie Mi
Meenie Mynie Moe
Take an octopus
And grab him by the toe toe toe toe toe toe toe toe
Chorus

It was 1952
Five thousand years ago
A met a girl, she had a car
On a drive we did go
There was a monkey at the wheel
And a razor in my brain
I took control and drove off the road
In the pouring rain
Chorus:
Car
Car
Car
Car
Slippy slippy slippery went the tones on my tail
She cried and laughed and tumbling we went
Another crack from you and you’ll end up in jail
And I won’t have the cash to pay the rent
Deterministic random faces accuse me as I walk
Without you though I’m carrying your head
The grass grows round the car crash from so many years ago
You’re lucky I didn’t wind up dead
I miss you my co-pilot when you’re not there
Which is often meaning everytime I wake
I’m a bit confused about the purpose that you wear
If I weren’t crazy that’s all I could take
Look upon my windshield mortals tremble as I break
The windows rusting grass upon the wheels
The energy you shed will quickly run into the night
I think I understand just how you feeled

Borrowing mom's car totally blew
It really sucked on ice
But if you wanna be cool
You gotta pay the price
A friend of a friend of a guy I know
Had a car to sell
I had some extra cash to blow
So I said what the hell
Chorus:
My first car was a thrill
It even looked good sitting still
But on the road it was a joke
It filled the county with blue smoke
So I spent all I had
Then it didn't look too bad
Then I went and spent some more
Now I just can't be ignored
It used to be a four door
But now I only got two
The hood was red, the tail was white
And both the doors were blue
The steering kept pulling to the left
And boy it really sucked
It had the power of a Yugo
And the handling of a truck
Chorus
You can hear my bass for miles
I ain't got no treble
I got it riding so low
I can feel every pebble
I jacked it up and I chopped it down
Now it's a mean machine
Now you just sit back and listen
To my tires scream
Chorus

BAYOU CADILLAC
You’re the prettiest girl on the bayou
I know you done heard that before
But how’d you like to get a new V-8
And trade in that old four on the floor
CHORUS:
Bayou Cadillac
I want to buy you a Cadillac
My, you’d look good in a Cadillac
If I were to buy you a Cadillac
I’m a simple man with simple tastes
I only accept the very best
Baby, you’re just like a Cadillac
So how’s about a little road test?
CHORUS
BRIDGE:
I know you’d look good with a Caddy
I don’t mean the kind that plays golf
I hope you don’t mind a convertible
‘Cause I’d love to see you take down your top
Now baby, I could teach you some driving
Tricks that you would love to learn
So come on over to my racetrack
And we’ll both make some rubber burn
CHORUS

Detroit Iron, two tons flyin’
Powering up hill
Jet black, get back Jack
Cadillac Coupe de Ville
Vows to keep, it made men weep
A dream you couldn’t kill
Super wide, a nation’s pride
Cadillac Coupe De Ville
Lean, obscene, a mean machine
A boyhood’s dream fulfilled
The urge you feel in solid steel
Cadillac Coupe De Ville
Road dog, gas hog,
A wish that’s built to thrilll
This road warrior never looked sorrier
Cadillac Coupe De Ville
Freeway, Leeway
Send the kids the bill
Broken trust, Creeping rust
Cadillac Coupe de Ville
It pulled the load, it ruled the road
But now it’s sitting still
Off the track, with no attack
Cadillac Coupe de Ville
This is your Daddy’s Caddy, laddie

(Lay Around the) Caddy
Well, I just got back from chooglin’
Down Mississippi way
And the boss man won’t get hold of me
If I got somethin’ to say
I’m-a livin’ in my Caddy
My good ol’ Detroit wheels
I got what I need and what I don’t have
I can beg, borrow or steal
chorus:
Lay around the Caddy, boy, kickin’ up my feet
I’m fishin’ out the back window if I need sumpin’ t’eat
Snoozin’ in the front seat, keep my banjo in a tree
‘Cause the back seat’s for my baby and me
I'm livin' up the good life
Got everything I need
the 9 to 5 is far behind
with avarice and greed
I just need my baby
and then we're good to go
We don't need no engine
to watch the river flow.
So climb on in here mama,
We'll have a real good time
The beers are in the cooler
And catfish on the line
And when the full moon rises
We'll bed down for the night
Left to our own devices
The stars our bedside light
Just you and me all cozy
In our rusted iron bed
We'll have no need to mosy
Where the noise just hurts your head
It may not get up to speed
But baby, apart from you,
My Caddy's all I need
This Caddy is just big enough for two
