From the time of our births
'Til we return to the earth
All that arrives will depart
'Til you defeat your innate
Will to destroy and not create
Passing shadows is all that we are
Rearranged grains of sand
And displaced air
The tide rolls in and
We're without a prayer
You won't find me and old man
Staring out to sea
Waiting for the sand in the glass
To run out
If you can ignore the siren's call
Long enough to put up four walls
And a roof that keeps the elements at bay
You might leave the world a bit
Better than it was when you found it
Before you slip back into the gray
When you put down your hammer
When your day is done
Someone was watching
They'll pick it back up
You won't find me an old man
Staring out sea
Waiting for the fires I brought to life
To be doused
If you wanna take a run at slipping one
Past mortality
Stop leaving footprints
And start building houses
It's not you against me
Not even us against them
We're on the same shore
When the tall waves crash in
We can build together
But won't stand apart for long
From the time of our births
Til heaven crashes to earth
All that arrives will depart
Indentations erased
By the water and wind
Time and time
And time again
You won't find me an old man
Staring out sea
Waiting for the fires I brought to life
To be doused
If you wanna take a run at slipping one
Past mortality
Stop leaving footprints
Start building houses
Start building houses
If you wanna take a run at slipping one
Past mortality
Stop leaving footprints
Start building houses

Edric Haleen - My Friend

I've kept a secret
For much of my life,
With no one the wiser,
Not even my wife.
When work had me feeling
Wound up like a spring
Or I felt like I needed
A break from composing...
I'd pack up my stuff
And I'd get in my car.
I'd smile, 'cause I knew
It was not very far
To the place where I'd met him.
And soon we would be
Back together --
Just Bigfoot and me.
Some afternoons,
For serenity's sake,
We'd go splashing around,
Skipping rocks in the lake.
We'd lie in the sun,
Or we'd climb on the dunes,
Or sit on a log
And relax and just spin tunes...
We'd listen to birds
And catch fish in the creek,
Or romp through the woods
Playing hide-and-go-seek.
It's hard to convey
How much fun it would be
Out together --
Just Bigfoot and me.
And down through the years
Our relationship grew.
I protected his secret.
And he kept mine, too.
And any time life became
Too much to handle,
I knew I could count on my friend . . .
But...
As someone said,
All good things come to an end.
And yesterday,
I said goodbye to my friend.
Bigfoot decided
That he had to go.
Said he had gotten
Fed up with Ohio...
Once he had gone
With a wave of his hand,
I looked at the footprints
He'd left in the sand.
A simple reminder
Of what used to be...
And then wiping back tears,
I thought back through the years
And remembered the fun
Of the things we had done.
And it made me feel glad
For the time that we had
Here together --
Just Bigfoot and me.

When the tide comes in, gonna wash it all away
And there won't be any trace that we were ever here today
We left footprints on the shore and built castles in the sand
But they can't stand when the tide comes in
Underneath the setting sun
Take a look at what we've done
With the Ocean so wide before us
Soon it will all be gone
When the darkness comes down and the water comes in
It won't make any difference where we've been
Hubris is the original sin
It'll all be gone when the tide comes in
When the tide comes in, gonna wash it all away
And there won't be any trace that we were ever here today
We left footprints on the shore and built castles in the sand
But they can't stand when the tide comes in
The sun will rise tomorrow
God willin' we'll be here to see
Building new castles and leaving new tracks
Cause that's the only way we know how to be
With our buckets and our shovels and our heels dug in
And our blinders on and our will spread thin
Though we lose and lose we still believe we'll win
It'll all begin again when the tide comes in
Wash it all away to the sea
Though we walk heavy or we tread lightly
Traces of ourselves are all we see
Gonna have to let it go, let what-will-be be what-will be
When the tide comes in, gonna wash it all away
And there won't be any trace that we were ever here today
We left footprints on the shore and built castles in the sand
But they can't stand when the tide comes in
It'll all be gone when the tide comes in
It'll all begin again when the tide comes in

Out of the house, I was out and bound
Over the frozen ice of Lake O'Dowd
At that time when snow just barely covers the ground
It's always hard to leave your hometown
Glance back and saw my footprints near the shore
I don't know why I hadn't noticed before
But my boots kept walking forward
'Cause I believe in something more
Okay
I left it behind me
Alright
The window of opportunity
Today
The test of my stability
It was time for a redirection
It was time to take action
Trust me, my friends, you will not be forgotten
I refuse to feel heartbroken
Okay
I left it behind me
Alright
The window of opportunity
Today
The test of my stability
Step by step by step by step
Step by step by step by step
Step by step by step by step
Step by step

I can't feel it anymore
but I remember how it felt
and I see through the fog
as the colors all melt
but anything was possible
and we were in command
the waves rolled around us
as we made a stand
And it all seemed within reach
as we walked down Orange Beach
I thought these things would happen every day
now everything we planned
is gone like footprints in the sand
and Alabama seems so far away, so far away
What felt like strong commitments
washed away beneath our feet
what worked at the ocean
failed on the street
at the edge of nowhere
things get simplified
that can't last forever
God knows we tried
But it all seemed within reach
as we walked down Orange Beach
I thought these things would happen every day
now everything we planned
is gone like footprints in the sand
and Alabama seems so far away, so far away

Uncle Darwin, can you see
What is happening to me?
Evolutionarily
We're starting over
It's been heating up for years
The rampant greenhouse of our fears
And though the Third World said they didn't start the fires
They fueled them with their sweat and tears
Here on the shore
We say goodbye
To withered hills
And dust-laden sky
And it's getting hard to breathe
We're returning to the sea
In the ocean depths we'll dwell
Fins and gills will be just swell
And whether we return to see the light of day
Only Time will truly tell
Here on Everest Island
I write our wisdom in the sand
That you may know of us, and the measure of our worth
Before the tide reclaims the land
Here on the shore
We say goodbye
To withered hills
And dust-laden sky
And it's getting hard to breathe
We're returning to the sea

The first steps that I took on shore
Were really a surprise
The pain was like I danced on knives
On blades and broken glass
The sand was warm, and soft and white
But all I felt was pain
I couldn’t even cry aloud
No sound in me remained
I begged the witch for just a chance
To find the prince I loved
I gave my voice to be with him
And dance with him above
She never told the other price
Of walking on the land
And the pain of leaving footprints in the sand
I am dancing for the prince, as light as air
I am floating like a bubble with a rainbow in my hair
And I try to make him see that I was the one
That the maid who saved him from the storm
Is me
But he does not see
And each step hurts me
cutting me, slicing me all through the night
And the prince chooses another for his bride
The last steps that I take on shore
Will fade with mornings breeze
The pain will stop as I dissolve
in to the cold brown sea
Not a mermaid any more
Just foam upon the wave
I couldn’t kill the prince that I had saved
If I had plunged my dagger in
and killed him in his sleep
A mermaid I’d return to be
A price that was too steep
I threw the dagger over board
Then kissed his lips and face
Then silently dove deep
Without a trace
And now I’m dissolving
Into foam on the ocean
Till I feel loving arms
Draw me high in the sky!
I am dancing for the prince, as light as air
I am floating like a bubble with a rainbow in my hair
He looked down and said he saw I was the one!
The the maid who saved men from the storm
Whose love could not bring them to harm
Deserves a second chance
He lifts me up to dance
As we sing together, spirits of the air

[Verse 1]
Once again out on the edge of all I've known,
Every burden carried, every brilliance shone,
My every question asked alone.
Long ago the road was ever in its prime.
Going on and on to mountains left to climb,
But that was once upon a time.
[Chorus]
Onward to the west I sail,
Guided by celestial counsel to the
Harbor of the land of peace at last.
[Verse 2]
Light and dark of day and night is all I've known,
Lands undying only fragments have been shown
Of havens lost but not alone
Now my open sea ahead is in its prime
Burdens fall before the zenith of my climb
I think that it is finally time
[Chorus]
Onward to the west I sail,
Guided by celestial counsel to the
Harbor of the land of peace at last.
[Verse 3]
Ever forward, though with love will come despair.
.............................................Nothing left behind but gardens waning bare,
Head shoreward to a land so bright and fair.
.............................................And a footprint in a beach of hope and prayer.
A star shining high leads us there.
.............................................My unseen ally, lead us there.
[Chorus]
Onward to the west I sail,
Guided by celestial counsel to the
Harbor of the land of peace at last.

I remember drawing pictures with chalk out in the street
A work of childhood dreams would blossom at my feet
But then the rain would wash away everything I drew
It was a way of asking me to create something new
CHORUS
You can always go back to the things you did before
The trick is building that into something more
You can keep your past with you every day
But you can’t hold on to what the rain will wash away
We would vacation at the beach and I brought my favorite boat
I made a castle out of sand around which it would float
But then a storm came in and washed it out to sea
Now the ship will float forever as far as the eye can see
CHORUS
BRIDGE
Remember when we were lovers, I thought you were my friend
I tried to call you many times but I didn’t hear from you again
I thought I saw your face today staring through the window pane
But I wasn’t really sure, it was covered by the rain
CHORUS

“Sand in My Toes”:
Hello, my dear, so happy to see you
Are you staring at something you see on my shoes?
Oh, that, ha that’s nothing, just a bit of sand
I guess I got slightly dirtier than I had planned
Chorus:
I don’t know why you’re always suspicious of me
You can tell that I’m totally trustworthy
I hope that you learn to listen to me again
I’m as honest as most old-time used-car salesmen
Why, sure I was in Akron, why do you ask, honey?
Oh, really, there’s no beach there? Huh, isn’t that funny?
That red smear on my collar? Just paint, I think.
That smell? Well, I just had one teeny small drink
I know that I’ve cheated before, it’s true
But I would never do it again, I promise you
My word is my bond, and you know that is that
So honey, please put down that large baseball bat

“Footprints”:
My name is Chtchth, cockroach archaeologist
We have found a strange fossil, and here is the twist:
I am am sending you pictures to help analyze
This mystery structure of gigantic size
Chorus:
Is it a trench, or some kind of a pool?
A burial plot, or remains of a school?
A place to house weapons? A place to store food?
Will we ever know which guess is really true?
We’ve scoured the ground and can find no more clues
Our archives have puzzling references to “shoes”
The humans of legend left no explanation
Of this mystery vexing the whole cockroach nation
The generals think it’s a trench for waging war
The doctors say it’s the remains of an ICU floor
Others think the five pods are all shell-tanning booths
I think it’s all a crock, to tell you the truth
