Jacob Haller - What Do We Need? (Shadow)

about

The basic idea behind a jug band is that you can make music even if you don't have traditional instruments -- you can use a jug instead of a bass, kazoos or slide whistles instead of a horn section, a washboard instead of drums, etc. But what if you don't even have those? This song explores, in a very ragged way, this vitally important question.

The instrumentation is:

* Lead instruments: voice, mouth buzzed against index finger, whistling.
* Bass: voice lowered an octave
* Percussion: knuckles dragged across fist, belly slapped with hand (shirt open to avoid interference)

lyrics

Well, what do we need for a jug band?
What do we need to make it in this land?
We need a jug.
Well, we ain't got no jug.
I guess we'll just do the best we can.
What do we need for a jug band?
[mouth bass solo]

Well now, What do we need for a jug band?
What do we need to make it in this land?
We need a slide whistle.
Well, we ain't got no whistle.
I guess we'll just do the best we can.
Well, now, what do we need for a jug band?
[whistling solo]

Well now, what do we need for a jug band?
What do we need to make it in this land?
We need a kazoo.
Well, we ain't got no kazoo.
I guess we'll just do the best we can.
Well, now, what do we need for a jug band?
Aw, come on, come on, come on, come on!
[finger-buzzing solo]

What do we need for a jug band?
What do we need to make it in this land?
We need a band.
Well, now, look at our band!
I guess we're doing the best we can.
Well, what do we need for a jug band?
['band' plays]
